I Walk For Water 2013

The Story of Aveda Earth Month 2012

KIDS NEED CLEAN WATER, BECAUSE KIDS ARE OUR FUTURE.

The children of Tilwari understand the value and meaning of clean water.  Their messages of joy and change are showcased on our Earth Month windows for the month of April.

In 2010, the Aveda Team travelled to the village of Tilwari in Northern India – a village where Global Green Grants had set up water access and sanitation projected in the community and in the school.  The most immediately affected by the new water project were the children of the community – with the addition of toilets and running water at their school, attendance was up, health was improved and school attendance had increased.

The children in this village were asked the question: WHAT DOES CLEAN WATER MEAN TO YOU?

These drawings are their answers:

This image shows Mothers carrying heavy loads of water, cows drinking from their own water source, happy women collecting water from a tap.

This image shows drawings of happy trees, growing crops from irrigation from clean water taps, happy mothers carrying clean water.

Take a moment to think about what this would mean to our kids in Canada. What would they say if asked the same question?  Would they even understand the question?

If a child under the age of 10 can understand the significance and impact that water can have on their lives, then the images in the drawings above are a true indication of the importance of clean water.  The issues faced by the children of Tilwari are the same as many children in other developing nations.  Clean Water = Life.

These incredible drawings were transformed into the 2012 Earth Month Campaign:  KIDS NEED CLEAN WATER.

There has never been an Earth Month campaign that speaks so directly to Aveda Canada’s work with WaterCan.  The work that WaterCan does in East Africa affects children the most.  When Kids have clean water, communities thrive and grow because kids get to be kids:  they go to school, they stay healthy, through their education they get better jobs and help grow their communities.  Kids are also the teachers in their communities and help their families and older generations understand the importance of hygiene and sanitation.

In October 2011, Aveda returned to Tilwari to witness even more progress through their support.  The community was thriving and excited to once again thank Aveda for their support.  The children were thrilled to see their drawings in action and happy to know that their stories and their drawings could help change the lives of so many other kids around the world.
