WATER SAVING STEPS

1. Contact your water utility to schedule a water use survey of your facility. Surveys are usually free and
provide an easy way to identify the most effective means to save water in your salon/spa.

2. Keep an eye on your water bill and the water meter. A higher than usual water bill could signal a leak.
Learn to read your water meter and review your bill for unusual increases to catch problems early on and prevent
additional, costlier problems down the road.

3. Take the Water Flow Test: Use a bucket and a timer to measure how many gallons of water you use per
minute for sinks, shampoo bowls, and showers. Aim for a goal of 2.5 gallons per minute or less to avoid water waste.

4. If you exceed your goal for water flow, install water saving devices such as low-flow aerators in
kitchen-type faucets, low flow shower heads, ultra-low-flush toilets, water efficient washing machines, and
self-closing faucets. Ask your water utility about available rebate programs in your area.

5. Talk to your landlord or leasing agent. They may benefit from your salon saving water and might share
the responsibility for scheduling a water use survey (see above) or fixing leaks that lead to water waste.

6. Look for a space with efficient sinks, showers and washers if you are opening a new location.
Ask your new landlord to help offset the cost for updating current fixtures.
